Windows Version Installer pop-up is a sign that your computer is infected by PUPs and maybe even adware. A Potentially Unwanted Program, or a PUP to give it a less unwieldy name, is a piece of computer program software which displays certain attributes that cause it to be possibly wanted – and possibly – or potentially – unwanted. PUPs are not generally harmful and they won't cause damage to your files or your computer but that's not to say that you shouldn't do your best to avoid them, if only for your sanity's sake! Potentially Unwanted Programs are often talked about in conjunction with adware and spyware as they have some similar behavioral patterns. And like adware, PUPs also install themselves in a rather underhand way. PUPs are only potentially unwanted because they do normally have a few useful features; they might be a tool bar or they could be a new home page or search engine. However they can be downright irritating too, severely affecting your user experience when you're online. So, the fact that you are getting this pop-up on your computer may indicate that the system may be infected by other malware as well.

PUPs that feature adware will drive you nuts with their constant bombardment of Windows Version Installer pop up and pop under windows as well as banner ads and other in your face marketing tactics. How do PUPs install themselves?

In most cases, Potentially Unwanted Programs are secretly bundled with another software program. This is often freeware and shareware although you may find you have a PUP installed on your machine from downloading something reputable, or even paid for. However, to lower your chances of installing a PUP or adware, you need to be very careful when you're downloading programs or apps from third party websites.

What problems can a PUP cause?

The majority of PUPs, including those that display "Windows Version Installer" pop-up are browser add-ons, such as tool bars, or adware and, in worst case scenarios, spyware. Potentially Unwanted Programs can cause issues including the following:

• Adware is a nightmare to deal with. Windows popping up all over the place and returning even after you've clicked them to make them disappear. You'll be tearing your hair out within ten minutes of having adware installed on your PC.
• A system that's vulnerable to security threats. When a PUP is running on your computer it can seriously affect your operating system's performance as it may be adversely interacting with other programs you have installed.
• Some PUPs monitor your Internet browsing habits so that they can target the type of adverts you see in relation to your searches. This constant monitoring and dispatching of data seriously slows down your operating system and Internet connection.
• Some PUPs are difficult to uninstall while others, even after removal, may still have certain components left on your machine.
• If you want to protect yourself from the above horrors, install a reputable anti-malware, be careful when downloading and check license agreements for any mention of 'added extras'. And if you do find a Potentially Unwanted Program on your computer... delete it.

"Windows Version Installer" Pop-up Removal Guide:

1. First of all, download anti-malware software and run a full system scan. It will detect and remove this infection from your computer. You may then follow the manual removal instructions below to remove the leftover traces of this malware. Hopefully you won't have to do that.

2. Remove "Windows Version Installer" pop-up related programs from your computer using the Add/Remove Programs control panel (Windows XP) or Uninstall a program control panel (Windows 7 and Windows 8).

Go to the Start Menu. Select Control Panel → Add/Remove Programs.
If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, select Control Panel → Uninstall a Program.



If you are using Windows 8, simply drag your mouse pointer to the right edge of the screen, select Search from the list and search for "control panel".



Or you can right-click on a bottom left hot corner (formerly known as the Start button) and select Control panel from there.



3. When the Add/Remove Programs or the Uninstall a Program screen is displayed, scroll through the list of currently installed programs and remove the following:

• VUUPC
• LyricsSay-1
• Websteroids
• and any other recently installed application

Simply select each application and click Remove. If you are using Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, click Uninstall up near the top of that window. When you're done, please close the Control Panel screen.

Remove "Windows Version Installer" pop-up related extensions from Google Chrome:

1. Click on Chrome menu button. Go to Tools → Extensions.



2. Click on the trashcan icon to remove BlocckkTheAds, LyricsSay-1, Websteroids, Quiknowledge, HD-Plus 3.5 and other extensions that you do not recognize.

Remove "Windows Version Installer" pop-up related extensions from Mozilla Firefox:

1. Open Mozilla Firefox. Go to Tools → Add-ons.



2. Select Extensions. Click Remove button to remove BlocckkTheAds, LyricsSay-1, Websteroids, Quiknowledge, HD-Plus 3.5 and other extensions that you do not recognize.



Remove "Windows Version Installer" pop-up related add-ons from Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools → Manage Add-ons. If you have the latest version, simply click on the Settings button.



2. Select Toolbars and Extensions. Click Remove/Disable button to remove the browser add-ons listed above.
