Adware is the common name used to cover a rather large range of programs that display ads on infected computers. Generic_r stands for a special routine designed to identify a certain class of adware and finally the last latter or letters stand for a very specific piece of adware programs that share the same characteristics and even code fragments. Adware authors create new adware programs each day and obviously use different names for marketing purposes, that's why Adware Generic_r.KE or Adware Generic_r.KI infections might be different for most users. There are hundreds of different adware applications that can be detected as Adware Generic_r, Conduit, BrowseBurstm JumpFlip, OpenCandy, for instance. What is more, very often, adware programs from this family come bundled with spyware, PUPs, and malicious browser extensions. This guide will walk you through removing all traces of this adware from your computer.
Adware Generic_r.KE and Adware Generic_r.KI detection |
Please note that adware programs that belong Adware Generic_r family try to hide their presence in the system. Even if you remove most of the malicious files from Program Files and Program Data folder, there might still be some additional files left on your computer as well as modified registry keys that will almost certainly try to load setup.exe files from Windows %temp% folder in order to re-download adware on your computer. What is more, such adware programs install malicious browser extensions that can access data on all websites and track your browsing activity.
So how do you download the program that you do want and avoid the one you don't? Is it even possible? Well, yes it is. You just need to exercise a little due care and attention. You'll have noticed that when you download software you'll see windows filled with small print and buttons asking you to click 'OK' or 'Next' or 'Continue'. Well this is when, unless you're careful, you may end up downloading something that you don't want onto your computer.
The upside is that usually adware programs are mentioned in this wording (although this in itself can be ambiguous) and should have a check box next to the mention. You just need to make sure that you're either checking the box to say 'no' you don't want to also download some adware application that will display coupons, etc. – or, and here's the even sneakier part, un-checking it to say the same thing.
