This is the reason why PUPs like Webafan.com are not classed as 'real' malware or as Trojan horses even though they are often removed by anti-malware programs that spot similar threats.
Webafan is sometimes displayed or promoted on websites but in the majority of cases they are installed because they are bundled with another software program. These can include movie players, peer-to-peer downloading clients and other freely distributed media applications. This is why if you want to limit your chance of getting bitten by a PUP you should be extremely careful when you're downloading applications from third party websites and not the official one that belongs to the software's owner.
The most common types of Potentially Unwanted Programs are browser add-ons, optimistically titled web search enhancers, sets of emoticons, adware and spyware. Unfortunately there are a number of problems that spring from having Webafan on your machine and these can, and often do, include the following:
- Weakened system resources: this is caused by the PUP's launch and subsequent automatic operation. This can result in the performance of your operating system being adversely affected. Some PUPs will monitor the way you browse the web and your online habits which is not only scary, but can also mean that your website content will download a lot more slowly.
- You'll start seeing far more adverts that you are just not interested in. These take the form of pop-up windows, keywords, sidebars or, sometimes, search engine results.
- Potentially Unwanted Programs that result in spyware will monitor and log the keys you hit when you're using your keyboard. This, obviously, has far reaching implications.
- Webafan might not tell you how to uninstall it whilst others might not be completely uninstalled. A good anti-malware is vital whenever it's necessary to delete Webafan malware, since most PUPs include many characteristics in common with PC threats.

If you are getting Webafan pop ups in Skype only, try this solution:
1. Exit Skype.
2. Rurn off "Hide file extensions," and select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" in Windows Folder Options. (You can turn these back how they were after, if you like.)
3. Navigate to: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\
4. There should be a file there with no extension, simply called "hosts". Drag this into Notepad.
5. At the VERY BOTTOM, add the following: 127.0.0.1 apps.skype.com
6. Saving this can be tricky: A. notepad wants to save as .txt by default. You have to select Save as type: "All files (*.*)", and B. Windows probably won't let you save directly to that folder, so you'll want to save your new "hosts" file to desktop or something first, and THEN drag-and-drop it to replace the OLD hosts file.
7. Restart Skype.
