It can be a real head scratcher – you remember changing your antivirus provider or downloading some software that helps you display script in a non-roman alphabet but you don't recall downloading a new browser extension or Bandoomed – you were fine with your existing one, thank you very much. So where did this Bandoomed come from? What is this new home page that's suddenly appeared? Why do I see so many ads on my computer? And furthermore, how do you stop it from happening again in the future?
There are a number of ways Bandoomed find its way on to your computer. Most if the time, this adware or PUP comes bundled with other programs, mostly freeware from unreliable websites. Sometimes, Bandoomed is installed by 'drive by' downloads meaning that you were attacked when you visited an infected website. Drive bys take advantage of vulnerabilities in your computer's security software.
If you're a Windows user who thinks you may have Bandoomed on your computer, there is actually a very simple way of checking. Go to your machine's Control Panel, click on 'Programs' and select 'Uninstall or Change a Program'. The names of programs you have installed will normally be registered with the Windows Add/Remove Programs capability meaning they'll be listed here. The publisher and the date you installed them will also be visible. Spotted something you don't remember installing? Google search it and if you don't recognize it, uninstall it. Sometimes, it might be even listed as Bandoomed.
To find out when and how you installed Bandoomed, click the 'Installed On' header in the uninstaller and sort your list of programs by date. If the time and date that the unwanted PUP was installed matches one of your intentionally downloaded programs this is a fairly reliable indication that the Potentially Unwanted Program was bundled with it.
Most of us don't download disreputable software but PUPs are bundled with perfectly legitimate programs too – either with or without that publisher's knowledge. Therefore you should take care when downloading all software and only download programs from the owner's website or from a third party site that you know can be trusted. You should also be careful about clicking on links or adverts in search engine results as there's no guarantee that the site they link to is safe.
To summarize, you need to be alert when you're browsing the internet, you shouldn't click links if you're not absolutely sure where they lead to, and you should only ever download programs if you trust both them and the website that has provided the download. PUPs and aware are annoying and can leave you open to further attack so it pays to be careful out there.
