iOS 8 features new

In addition to a new iPhone for 2014, we expect to see a new version of iOS for 2014. The iOS 7.1 release is rumored or March, but after this small update we are turning our eyes to iOS 8.
As far as Apple is concerned, there is no iOS 8 that consumers need to be concerned about, though the company did issue a statement that it would be delivering bug fixes for the frequent white logo reboots of iOS 7 versions up through iOS 7.0.4 in the U.S. This will likely come as the iOS 7.1 update that is rumored for March.
With the iOS 8 update, Apple’s attention is reportedly turning to bigger and better things for the iPhone and iPad software. While leaks are still scarce there are some small hints at what Apple is working on in iOS 8. Here are 5 things to know about the iOS 8 update as we move into February.
Familiar Look and Feel
Apple uses a major jump in the iOS line to offer new features, and in 2013 Apple used it to introduce a radical new look for the iPhone and iPad software that shapes the vision of iOS to come.
We don’t expect Apple will use the iOS 8 release to usher in any major visual changes for iOS 8. For one, the company is still busy polishing iOS 7′s look with numerous updates to the user experience for iOS 7.1.
With small changes still on the way for an update that could arrive in the next two months, and the fact that Apple did not make major changes to the iOS look until last year it seems unlikely that the company would shake things up again.
From an insider perspective Mark Gurman of 9to5Macshares that, “iOS 8 likely will not feature major interface or graphics changes. There will be minor enhancements across the system, but none that are as noticeable as the changes introduced last year.”
With these factors combined, users should not be surprised to see an iOS 8 release bring small tweaks to the user experience that enhance functionality without dramatically changing the user experience.
Health and Fitness Tracking
In the most recent release of information about iOS 8, sources tell Gurman that there will be a major focus on fitness tracking, health tracking and sensors. The sources point to s singular app under development as Healthbook that appears to be a key component of taking the tracking Apple started with the iPhone 5s and the M7 coprocessor to a new level in 2014.
A big part of IOS 8 will likely be sensor support and a new Healthbook app.
Perhaps the most interesting information that9to5Macsources share are the breadth of things Apple wants to allow this app to track in iOS 8, some of which will certainly require new accessories or sensors on board an iWatch or new iPh one 6.
*.steps taken
*.calories burned
*.miles walked
*.weight loss
*.blood pressure
*.hydration levels
*.heart rate
*.glucose levels (potentially)
*.Medication tracking with reminders
The app will reportedly look similar to the Passbook app which uses cards to show information. Samsung offers an S Health app on the Galaxy S4, but it does not track this depth of information.
Apple already met with the FDA in Decemberand several hiressuggest Apple is going all in on health tracking in iOS 8 to show users that the iPhone is a tool to help them live a better life.
In order to deliver on this Apple will need to leverage an array of sensors that traditionally existed in third-party accessories which means that iOS 8 will enable the features, but users will possibly need an iPhone 6 or iWatch with new sensors to fully experience the health and fitness benefits of iOS 8.
iOS 8 is Key to iWatch
iOS 7 brought a major change to the look of iOS, but it didn’t deliver the same big set of new features as iOS 6 did. The iOS 8 update is shaping up to be one that brings a collection of new features and enables connections to new sensors and devices.
There is a lot of speculation about iOS 8 bringing new features, but the first solid information about the new operating system comes from9to5Mac. In the same article that details the health and fitness features, Gurman shares details about iOS 8 and an iWatchthat will likely enable all of these features with a sensor laden wearable.
“Based on the health information that iOS 8 is capable of reading, Apple’s wearable device will seemingly have sensors at least capable of measuring blood pressure, hydration, heart rate, and steps. iOS 8 combined with the iWatch is said to be able to monitor several other pieces of health and fitness data, but additional specifics are not as clear as of now.”
If this is the case, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Apple reveal some of the iOS 8 features we hear rumored

Why my Android apps make less money and how to change that

By the end of 2013, Android had captured an impressive 81 percent of the global smartphone market share.
But in terms of developer mindshare, Android still ranks slightly behind iOS — and for a good reason. An average Android app makes 5 times less money per downloadthan an iOS app. Even though Android has by far passed iOS in terms of global market share, the picture is not so clear-cut in terms of revenue. Despite Android’s dominant market share, for many app developers, iOS is still the biggest platform.
The most popular reason often repeated as the cause is related to user demographics. In every country of the world, iPhone is the top-end device, only affordable to the relatively well-off. Android, on the other hand, is available on a whole spectrum of devices from high to low end forms. It would be logical to assume that the owner of a $600 high-end Android smartphone would spend more on apps than the owner of a $40 low-end device on average.
This notion seems to be backed up by data. According to App Annie, India already takes third place in all app downloads for Google Play, but it is nowhere to be found in the corresponding revenue chart. The same story for Brazil and Russia — lots of downloads, but almost no revenue for developers. It sure seems that users in these countries either can’t afford or just do not want to pay for app content the same way that users in the US and Western Europe do.
But looking beyond the basic charts, we discover that the situation is a bit more complex.
Looking at our own transaction data at Fortumo for paying users across different apps and territories on Android, we see that the monthly average revenue per paying user (ARPPU) is not as different across countries as one might expect:
USA – $7.76 monthly ARPPU
Brazil – $4.7 monthly ARPPU
India – $2.1 monthly ARPPU
Russia – $10.5 monthly ARPPU
So, while an average paying user in Brazil might spend half of what an average paying user in the U.S. does, the difference in average income in these countries is almost five times in favor of the U.S.In India, an average paying user spends 3.5 times less than an average paying user in the U.S., but the difference in average income is a staggering 30 times. And in Russia, where income is four times less than in the U.S., our data even seems to suggest that an average user pays more than the one in the U.S.
So, is this because in Russia, Brazil, and India, only the rich can afford to pay for apps and content? Or is there a more prosaic reason — namely that users in those countries are just unable to pay with a credit card (the only payment option accepted by major app store such as Google Play in their country) because they don’t have one?
If we look at the number of credit card owners (and compare it to the number of smartphone owners) in these countries, the data might provide part of the explanation:
India: 19 million credit cards (1.5 percent of the population — source) compared to 60 million smartphones
Brazil: 66.6 million credit cards (33 percent of the population — source) compared to 97 million smartphones
Russia: 28 million credit cards (19 percent of the population — source) compared to 95 million smartphones
If more local payment options were supported by the store, would more users pay? Very likely.
For many users in the emerging markets, mobile is often the most accessible, if not the only form of digital entertainment. It’s only logical that it could consume a relatively bigger portion of their income.
So, should developers just wait until their favorite global app store tackles the “emerging market problem” and adds more local payment options? Last year, the answer might as well have been “yes,” but now this is becoming an increasingly weak strategy. Why? For one, Western app markets are becoming increasingly saturated.
Flurry indicates that during the 2013 holiday period, app download growthwas just 11 percent compared to 90 percent for the same period in 2012. Over 60 percent of Americans already have a smartphone, and new user growth is slowing, whereas India has less than 10 percent smartphone penetration, but shipments are increasingat a huge rate.
But what’s the alternative? Luckily, there are many. While Google Play is the main distribution channel for Android apps in North America and Europe, in many places elsewhere, there are strong alternatives, including:
1.Independent app stores such as SlideME, Mobile9, Mobango, Opera, AppsLib, PandaApp, CNet, GetJar
